A young asylum seeker deported from Germany last week has killed himself in Kabul, Afghan officials say.

The 23-year-old man from northern Balkh province killed himself at a hotel in the Afghan capital on Tuesday, authorities said.

DPA reports that the man was forcibly returned to Afghanistan after spending eight years in Germany, according to one of the officials. He was among 69 asylum seekers forcibly returned to Afghanistan on July 4.

The German Interior Ministry confirmed that "one of the passengers on the repatriation flight was found dead in accommodation in Kabul." German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer noted on Tuesday that the 69 people had been returned, coincidentally, on his 69th birthday, but added that was not on his order.

Germany has returned around 300 people to Afghanistan since the end of 2016.
