Attempts to claim a wrong country of origin are usually futile - Immigration agents are trained in tracing your origins

EU member states each have their own list of "safe countries of origin" - some are longer, others shorter. Germany, for instance, recognizes Senegal, Ghana, and the Balkan states as "safe". People from these nations will probably not be granted asylum or other forms of protection. Some people believe that if they lie about their country of origin they are more likely to be granted asylum in Europe. Is this true?
