Serbia: Afghan migrants face an uncertain future

Migrants and refugees on the Greek island of Chios are living in dire conditions. Even though the refugee camp is not as overcrowded as the Moria camp on Lesbos, migrants are also sleeping in tents because all containers in the camp are full. Given the freezing winter temperatures and long waiting times for asylum interviews, they are facing a long and harsh winter.
More than 4,000 refugees and migrants currently reside on the Greek island of Samos, and the refugee camp with a capacity for only 700 people is bursting. Poor hygiene and harsh weather conditions are posing a threat to the migrant population. The UN Refugee Agency UNHCR warns the situation could escalate to become as catastrophic as on the neighboring island of Lesbos.
The Moria refugee camp on the Greek island of Lesbos has been in the spotlight of the European migration crisis numerous times, but the disastrous conditions seem to have reached a new low. Luca Fontana, the co-coordinator of Doctors without Borders' (MSF) operations on the island, tells InfoMigrants how alarming the conditions have become in the camp, especially for young asylum seekers.
Approximately two thousand migrants are currently stranded in the city Velika Kladuša in Bosnia. Most of them live in plastic tents. Locals are criticizing the Bosnian government for the fact that there is no proper accommodation for the refugees. They call on the government and the international community to transfer these people to appropriate housing.
The Teferic pizzeria in Velika Kladusa in northeastern Bosnia gives out free food to migrants. The owners of the restaurant, however, are worried that without donations, they will soon have to close down the place.
Some migrants in Bosnia claim they have been beaten by Croatian police while trying to cross the Bosnian border into the EU. The International Organization for Migration cannot verify these allegations, it does, however, confirm it has heard these stories as well.
The number of refugees and migrants arriving in Bosnia continues to increase and the situation is critical, especially in the north-western part of the country. IOM representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, Peter Van der Auweraert, describes the main challenges and what he hopes will be a short-term solution to get migrants away from dire living conditions in the field.
Many migrants in Bosnia claim that they have been beaten by the Croatian border police while trying to cross over into the EU. Those who live in tents in forests near the border town Velika Kladusa in Bosnia complain of bad living conditions.
The removal of one Afghan asylum seeker from Germany who was recently deported as part of a group of 69 people was reportedly against the law. Another one from the same group now told InfoMigrants that he too was deported before the end of his asylum process.
The number of refugees attempting suicide in Germany's central state of Hesse is on the rise. The Left Party parliamentary group attributes the increase to dire conditions in asylum centers and an increased threat of deportation. Hesse's state government says there are exemplary psychosocial care programs in place.
