An Italian police car and a vehicle carrying 10 undocumented migrants and an alleged smuggler were involved in a high-speed car chase in the Trieste area.

A high-speed car chase occurred on Saturday at dawn for numerous kilometers between a Trieste border police vehicle and a BMW in which 10 migrants and an alleged smuggler were found to have been travelling.

The incident began on Saturday morning around 5:30 am when the car, with a Hungarian license plate, arrived from Slovenia at a border crossing near Trieste. Border police patrol agents reportedly motioned for the car to stop but the BMW sped up in an attempt to escape.

Alleged smuggler managed to flee

Police cars chased the BMW across roads near Trieste and then in the city itself until the vehicle turned into a dead-end street. The police blocked the road but the alleged smuggler fled on foot and managed to jump over a wall and flee.

The police found that ten men had been travelling in the car: eight Turkish nationals including two minors, an Iranian and an Afghan. They were all taken to a police station for identification procedures.

More migrants apprehended

On Friday, Trieste police, border police and the carabinieri reportedly apprehended 51 migrants between San Dorligo della Valle and Via Caboto in Trieste. Most of the migrants were from Pakistan. After being divided into three groups, they were taken to police stations where they all requested international protection.

On Thursday morning, also along the border area with Slovenia, border police apprehended another 55 undocumented migrants.
