Timeline for citizenship
According to the Integrazione Migranti website of the Italian interior ministry and Law 91/1992 on citizenship regulations, requests can take up to 48 months to process from the date they are filed.
The new decree law on immigration (DL 130/2020), currently being converted into law by the parliament, has lowered this to 36 months for citizenship requests filed starting from the date that the law being converted comes into force.
According to the latest figures from the national statistics institute ISTAT, there were 127,000 people who were granted Italian citizenship in 2019 compared to 103,000 in the previous year.
Nine out of ten of the ''new Italians'' in 2019 were from outside the EU.
Among the non-EU nationals, the Albanian, Moroccan, and Brazilian communities were the largest. However, those that experienced the largest increase compared with the previous year were the Macedonian, Pakistani, and Ecuadorian communities.
