The Italian interior ministry said the country has already surpassed 10,000 migrant arrivals in 2021, three times more than the same period last year. This figure doesn't include the 455 migrants brought to Italy by the NGO ship Sea-Watch 4.

The Italian interior ministry, in an update published Monday (May 3), said the country has already surpassed 10,000 migrant arrivals in 2021, with a total of 10,107 people who disembarked between January 1 and May 3.

This figure doesn't include 455 additional migrants who were brought to Italy by the NGO ship Sea Watch 4 on Tuesday, May 4.

The number is three times higher than the same period in 2020, when the total was 3,573.

Ministry data

The data show that in the first three days of May, over 1,000 people reached Italian shores, 997 on the first day of May alone.

The figure rises to more than 1,500 if the 455 from Sea Watch are counted.

In terms of the declared nationalities of the arrivals, Tunisians are currently in first place (1,412), followed by Ivorians (1,237) and Bangladeshis (1,014).

Rounding out the top 10 are Guinea (827), Egypt (581), Sudan (560), Mali (447), Eritrea (436), Algeria (362) and Morocco (336).

Foreigners listed as "other" nationalities total 2,895, a figure that could include migrants still undergoing identification procedures.

A total of 1,232 minors arrived in Italy as of April 26 this year.

Brothers of Italy party says situation 'out of control, naval blockade needed'

The data on migrant arrivals in Italy brought criticism of the government from the right-wing party Brothers of Italy (FdI). "More than 10,000 illegal arrivals by sea in the past four months, triple the number of landings in 2020 when PD and M5S were governing," said Senator Giovanbattista Fazzolari, national director of the FdI programme.

"The Draghi government has managed to do even worse than that of the pro-immigration Conte 2. No justification, seeing as how the majority of illegal immigrants come from countries where there isn't any war or emergency, such as Tunisia, the Ivory Coast, Bangladesh.

"This unacceptable data confirms that the only way to fight mass illegal immigration is the one that has always been shown by Brothers of Italy and Giorgia Meloni: a naval blockade implemented in agreement with the authorities of North Africa, to restore legality and stop deaths at sea," Fazzolari said.
