A one-year-old baby from Syria has died in a forest in Poland on the Belarusian border, international media said on Thursday. The reports were based on statements from Polish aid workers.

According to a Polish NGO, a Syrian couple had lost their one-year-old while sleeping in the forest on the border for the duration of the past month.

It is the latest fatality known along the European Union's eastern border. At least 11 other people have died since the summer trying to cross that border in the EU.

EU Parliament President David Sassoli expressed shock over the incident, as the crisis situation along the Belarus-Poland border continues to worsen. He commented that it was "heartbreaking seeing a child die in the cold at the EU's doorstep."

The 65-year-old aded that the "exploitation of migrants and asylum seekers must stop, the inhumanity must stop."
