A 32-year-old man who stabbed several people at a center for asylum seekers at Lake Constance last year has been sentenced to life in jail. The attack left six people seriously wounded and a 38-year-old Syrian died at the scene.

A man accused of attacking several people with a kitchen knife in a German center for refugees was sentenced to life in prison in the southern city of Ravensburg on Thursday (February 16).

A court ruled that the 32-year-old had committed murder and attempted murder in the village of Kressbronn on the northern shore of Lake Constance last June.

What happened at the refugee center?

The man, said to be a resident of the refugee shelter, knocked on several doors at the facility and "stabbed indiscriminately" at anyone who answered, both men and women, the German news agency dpa reported.

Six people were left seriously wounded and a 38-year-old Syrian died at the scene.

Prosecutors said before the attack there had been an argument about living together in the refugee shelter and about integration, according to dpa.

The defence had initially asked for 13 years for manslaughter and no protective custody.

According to dpa, the defendant had kept silent about the accusations in court.
